Cathe Friedrich- Kick, Punch and Crunch

Equipment used: none for the aerobics; a stability ball for the ab work

Level: Advanced

Bottom line: this excellent kickboxing workout provides intensity that steadily increases throughout the routine.

As anyone familiar with my reviews has already read, I am a great admirer of Cathe’s workouts, and I think many rank among the best workout videos ever produced. Although some of her workouts are not among my favorites, this one is truly a winner. As a kickboxing aficionado, I’ve done many, many kickboxing workout DVDs, and I can honestly say that this is one of the best in terms of production and flow.

Cathe leads two segments, one aeroboxing and one classic kickboxing. Both combine solid choreography that flows perfectly to really challenge your body while avoiding awkward motion. The first segment takes a little longer to get my heart rate up than I would like, but once my heart rate has been established, it stays up. Throughout the workout, the intensity is boosted and then  decreased cyclically, so this is almost an interval-style workout (another big plus).

So why not a perfect rating? As beautifully constructed as this workout may be, I found it just a little boring. The music is  drab and although the sets are very challenging and dynamic, I felt that there was a little too much repetition in some of the combinations. I’ll definitely be doing this workout again, but I’m not sure that I’ll look forward to it the way I look forward to some of my other kickboxing workouts.

Overall: this workout combines aerobic kickboxing with more traditional kickboxing combinations in a dynamic and challenging routine that increases in intensity throughout. It is a model of excellent production and cuing, although some many find it slightly lacking in energy and/or novelty.
